Falconry in the UAE is very well-known and extremely interesting. We didn’t want to become falconers, but we wanted to learn about this tradition on site. It originated from the Bedouins’ hunting, who used falcons to hunt their prey in the desert. This form of hunting likely dates back to 3000 BC, when people in Mesopotamia and Mongolia practiced falconry. In the UAE, falconry has been elevated to a status symbol, and in 2010, it was even listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It’s also fascinating to note that falconry (bāz means falcon in Persian) is practiced not only with falcons, but with all kinds of birds of prey. In this video, we showcase the fascinating world of this tradition in the UAE.
